The Making Of / The Story

Fire Brigade Calendar
Firemen, in a different light! Not as faceless fighters of fire and catastrophe safely "shielded" behind their breathing masks but as well-trained men, more than fit for their hard task.

The photographs shown here were taken at staged shootings and are not intended to reflect actual deployments. Professional firemen who, having learnt their profession, have chosen to follow their vocation to become firefighters.

The "Firefighter Calendar", by firemen for colleagues and friends of the fire-brigade!

Story

June 2000, an idea is born!

During a conversation with Mrs. Martha Proidl Stachl (ORF) she asked me whether the Viennese fire-brigade produced a calendar - not of fire-fighting vehicles or deployments, but of the men in uniform, and namely with less on than one would normally get to see. Such calendars exist in the USA and GB. That was the "starting signal" for the project

2001 Firefighter

The first problems

After initial considerations and preparations, it was clear that this project could only be a success if the quality was right. Dorothee Gussenbauer created a team with Marion Carniel, an excellent photographer, and Birgit Haegele the perfect graphic artist for the job. As we were not supported by the fire-brigade management, a purely private project was set up.

Termination threatens!

The further the preparations progressed, the more the projected total costs became and the future financing also became uncertain. The fire-brigade management practically forbade fthe project and then the ORF also withdrew its media support. During casting there was a large debate on BW or color photography, more or less clothing, studio or location. After nearly five hours the project had practically "died" for me.

A new beginning

After a sleepless night, a fresh start. The restrictions imposed by the fire-brigade management are tight but execution is possible. The financial side is also secured thanks to my mother. Colour photos, the maximum of exposed torso, unless it is credible that more would be visible in such a situation. Locations for the photographs: a quarry near Vienna with the Grossau voluntary fire-brigade .

Action

The shootings took place in the middle of September. A lot of preparation work, many problems and the weather god also has some trials in store for us. Then the fearful question: "how will the photos turn out? Hopefully nothing will go wrong during development "

The first results

The first pictures were ready by the end of September. Now for the next task - which of the many fabulous pictures should be chosen for the calendar? A jury made up of friends and acquaintance is set up. A load of ladies as they are really the ones the calendar is intended for. During a long evening the 12 photos and the cover are selected.

Printing

We found a small printers specialising in producing calendars - the Mascha Printing Company. After the necessary preparations on the part of the repro dept., our calendar went to print with a run of 1000.

Initial PR work

The first invitation to a presentation did not seem to interest the press much. Nevertheless, some journalists and the ORF Studio Vienna came to the show.

Presentation

It was so far on 3rd November 2000. In the ZU-GA-BE (a bar) our presentation flooded the stage, literally. Our presentation, consisting of a short demonstration deployment accompanied by music especially mixed for us and a lot of smoke, was entusiastically applauded by the around 100 guests. A report about the presentation was broadcast in "Vienna today" on 4th November 2000 .

Media work

Alrhough at first we had to run after contacts at various magazines, by the beginning of December press work began to develop its own dynamics.. Magazines, radio and TV stations wanted to run reports with and on us.

Conclusion

The final high point of our work was on the 3rd January 2001 with an appearance on "Welcome Austria" completing our publicity work with the project 2001 Firefighter finishing by the end of January 2001.

2002 FIREFIGHTER however already is in preparation!
