Fire Brigade Calendar
Firemen seen in a different light again! Not as lone fighters but as a unit and team, as highly trained specialists who are more than fit for their hard task of combating fire and other catastrophes.

The photographs shown here were taken at staged shootings and are not intended to reflect actual deployments. All men shown here are professional firemen who, having learnt their profession, have chosen to follow their vocation to become fire-fighters.

The "Firefighter Calendar", by firemen for colleagues and friends of the fire-brigade!

Story

A new year! A new project!

If the most difficult task of 2001 was to win over those responsible in the Viennese firebrigade, the main project of this year was to improve on an already successful product.

Our main theme in 2001 was the "men behind the masks" - for 2002, playing on the "2" - it is the two that make a team!

The calendar is intended to show that the fire-brigade does not consist of single fighters, but consists of a unit and a crew . Firefighters are highly trained specialists who are more than fit for their hard task of combating fire and other catastrophes.

The initiators of this project, Peter Leitner and Dorothee Gussenbauer brought the old and tested team together again to work on this new project along with several voluntary workers: Marion Carniel, photographer, Ursula Grimm, make-up, and Birgit Haegele, graphic artist. After examining the first photos for this year we were sure we would reach the same high standard set last year.

The large media interest created by the 2001 Firefighter calendar and its subsequent success meant that the Viennese Firebrigade is prepared to offer its help with the shootings this year. Mrs. Renate Brauner, town councilor, visited the 'Firefighter team' together with the Director of the fire-brigade, Dr. Friedrich Perner, and representatives of the press and ORF (Austian Broadcasting Corporation) at a shooting in the largest fire training complex in Europe at the Floridsdorf fire station.

The photographs in this complex were planned down to the last detail, necessary for such effects as the 6-8 meters long flame selected for the background of the January photo. A fire-brigade exercise is represented at the on the industrial training plant of this complex. This plant simulates a burning gas main with the flame burning over the stop valve and preventing close access. The firefighters attack the blaze "armed" only with a hose against the flame with a temperature of several hundred degrees. The goal is to push the flame aside with the water jet so that a firefighter can close the valve.

Other photos were taken in the studio. These were perhaps not so spectacular, but were a great challenge because of the lighting conditions.
The outdoor shootings took place with the support of the firebrigade divers at port Kuchelauer and the Grossau voluntary fire-brigade in a quarry in Lower Austria.

The presentation of the 2002 Firefighter calendar will take place at the end of October. The calendar will be available immediately afterwards from bookshops, on the InterNet and by phone.
